DAASV vs. Yale Tall Ship Skirmish 03/16/13 : On 3/16/2013 members of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley (DAASV) and guests boarded the Lady Washington, a historic tall ship visiting the San Francisco Bay. This was not another day sail. Instead, we experienced a thrilling “Battle of the Bay” — a simulated maritime battle reenactment with another tall ship, the Hawaiian Chieftain. This was about real cannons (but no cannon balls), close-quarters maneuvers, and an educational taste of 18th century maritime life aboard tall ships. The Hawaiian Chieftain was populated by the Yale alumni club. In 1788, the original Lady Washington became the first American vessel to make landfall on the west coast of North America as well as the first to visit Honolulu, Hong Kong, and Japan. At 112 feet, the modern Lady Washington is an exact historic reproduction launched in 1989, and is the Official Ship of the State of Washington. At 103 feet, the Yale Club's topsail ketch Hawaiian Chieftain is a replica of a typical European merchant trader of the turn of the nineteenth century. Her hull shape and rigging are similar to those of Spanish explorer's ships used in the expeditions of the late 18th century along the Washington, Oregon, and California coasts. Our swashbuckling adventure — perfect for the entire family — departed from the Port of Redwood City. Participants were invited to come dressed in their favorite Dartmouth or "Pirates of the Caribbean" gear. This was, indeed, an alumni event like no other! DAASV at San Francisco 49ers 03/07/13 : On 3/7/2013 members of DAASV and University Club of Palo Alto were welcomed to a VIP Preview of the New 49ers Stadium at the Santa Clara Stadium Preview Center in the Santa Clara. We were welcomed with drinks and snacks, met with 49ers alumni, viewed all FIVE of the SUPERBOWL trophies earned by the 49ers, met some 49ers cheerleaders, heard presentations by 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke, and 49ers COO Paraag Marathe, and participated in a Q&A session about the team. The event was held in the Techmart Facility in Santa Clara. During the evening we met several 49ers alumni including Steve Bono (third-strong quarterback behind Joe Montana and Steve Young), Eric Wright (considered one of the best cornerbacks of his day), Dennis Brown (starter at defensive end), Keena Turner (former linebacker and now VP for Football Affairs), Ray Wersching (kicker who held the 49ers record for points, field goals, and extra points), and Guy McIntyre (offensive lineman). VIP Tour of San Francisco’s version of the Playboy Mansion 10/14/12 : DAASV members experienced a VIP tour the old National Guard Armory (now home to Kink — an adult entertainment production company) in San Francisco. Our two hour look into the mysterious five-story mansion of porn was led by employees of Kink, the production company that acquired the building in late 2006, which is owned by a fellow Ivy alum. Our VIP experience took DAASV members though all five floors of the landmark fortress originally built to service the National Guard. We explored the facilities, as well as toured the elaborate and cinematic sets that have since been constructed by Kink's Art Department for use as production studios. Not only did alumni see where Kink operates, but they also saw where some scenes from the first "Star Wars" movie (yes, the PG-rated version) was filmed, and so much more. DAASV and Legacy Admissions Process 09/24/12 : The Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley (DAASV) and hosted an opportunity for DAASV member parents and students to discover what it takes to become a Dartmouth student today. Attendees spent some social time sharing at the University Club of Palo Alto, then Isabel Bober '04, Associate Director of Admissions at Dartmouth College, provided several application packages for participants to review and discuss. After interactive discussion of each application and voting on which application lead to acceptance, wait listing, or rejection, participants were told what actually happened with each. It was a unique opportunity to better understand the application process and how the College considers applicants. These images are available for participants to download and use. Dartmouth Overnight Adventure Aboard USS Pampanito 09/01/12 : Behold another stellar overnight Dartmouth experience aboard the USS Pampanito (SS-383), a World War II Balao-class fleet submarine museum and memorial at San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf. While on board, DAASV members and guest will had both a private tour and personalized instruction by staff on the history and operation of submarines. During the course of our visit, each attendee completed a submarine qualification worksheet and earn a special certificate from the USS Pampanito commemorating the overnight adventure.

Private Roastery Tour at Blue Bottle Coffee 08/26/12 : DAASV members and guests enjoyed a behind the scenes tour of Blue Bottle’s roastery facility as well as a sampling of single origin beans. Our private tour included a presentation about the history of the Blue Bottle Coffee Company, followed by a barista who gave us an in-depth presentation on coffee processing, roasting, and preparation, as well as a single origin coffee tasting. The session included Blue Bottle’s house-made pastries, and each attendee left with a freshly roasted bag of coffee beans.

DAASV at America's Cup World Series 08/23/12 : In September, San Francisco hosted the first of two America's Cup World Series. The Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley, along with the local Harvard and Brown alumni clubs, held a special event on the Seaward, an 82-foot schooner arranged through the Olympic Circle Sailing Club in Berkeley, CA. The day's festivities was sponsored by Appleton Estate Rum. The racing was terrific along the shore by Marina Green. The companions were excellent, and sailing on San Francisco Bay is always a delight. Participants are welcome to download and use images from this gallery. Dartmouth Stand Up Paddle Board Class 07/28/12 : Stand Up Paddle Boarding, or in the Hawaiian language hoe he'e nalu, is an emerging global sport with a Hawaiian heritage. The sport is an ancient form of surfing, and re-emerged as a way for surfing instructors to manage their large groups of students, as standing on the board gave them a higher viewpoint. Dartmouth alumni and friends gathered to learn the basics of Stand Up Paddling in a two-hour class. The land portion was about 20 minutes and then we went for a paddle along the Sausalito waterfront with our instructor to fine tune our technique. Afterward, we met at a Sam’s Café in Tiburon for a late breakfast, or early lunch.

4th Annual Young-At-Heart Pong Tournamnet 07/27/12 : It was that time of year again - when Dartmouth graduates gathered under the summer sun to prove their mettle at the Big Green sport of Pong. This was one of our most popular events of the year as alumni, Big Green Bus crew, and current students dusted off their paddles in pursuit of eternal fame and glory: their names inscribed on the DAASV’s Sandberg ’71 Pong Trophy. Attendees brought their A-game and a partner, or we matched them up with someone at the event. For those not competing there was plenty of food, drinking, and heckling on the sidelines. All young-at-heart pong enthusiasts were welcomed, and encouraged, to attend.

Point Bonita Lighthouse Tour 07/22/12 : Point Bonita Bridge Replacement is now complete! The tunnel, bridge and lighthouse have just re-opened to the public, and Dartmouth alumni, families, and friends get a private, docent-led tour! Point Bonita is part of the largest urban national park in the United States — the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. A secret jewel of the Bay Area, Point Bonita is still an active lighthouse, and has the distinction as having been the last manned lighthouse on the California coast.

Dartmouth Alumni Sunset Sail 07/18/12 : Dartmouth alumni and guests left your mid-week blues at the dock having come out for a rejuvenating, twilight sail on San Francisco Bay with fellow Dartmouth salty dogs (or those who soon want to be). One Wednesday each month, members and non-members head out to OCSC for two hours of sailing, either in chartered boats or with an instructor. Together, we’ll hit the water with old friends or new ones to break up the work week and watch the sun set behind the Golden Gate.

DAASV Whale Watching Trip with Marine Biologist 06/30/12 : Dartmouth alumni, families, and friends journeyed to Monterey for an exclusive and educational alumni outing in search of some of the world’s largest mammals and sea creatures. Humpback Whales and Blue Whales migrate to central California waters each year to feed during the summer months. Monterey Bay is a prime feeding location for these whales, and is the best place in the nation to observe a variety of marine mammals and seabirds. The whales often concentrate in a variety of locations within the Bay depending on movements and abundance of the their primary prey — anchovies and krill. Marine biologist, Nancy Black was onboard and has worked with whales and dolphins in the region for over 10 years, and has become an expert in the biology of whales off the California coast.

Dartmouth Thrill Ride: Zip Lining Over The Redwoods 06/24/12 : Were you one of the…um, daring…souls who scaled the smokestack of Dartmouth’s heating plant? How about the flyspace arches of the Moore Theatre at the Hop? Perhaps Bartlett Tower or the Lone Pine? Well, if a high-flying adventure is your thing, but the thrill of getting caught is not, we had an alumni event for you: a zipline through redwood and Douglas fir tree-tops in Sonoma. Alumni couldn't believe how high-pitched their excitement got as their zipped through California’s giants. There’s no need to risk a run in with Campus Po for a thrill, because the DAASV hosted a popular eco-tourism adventure in wine country.

DAASV members took an exciting first step into the world of hot glass is a private 3-hour class in which they learned how to gather and manipulate molten glass, add colors of their choice (Dartmouth green, of course), and shaped it into a beautiful piece of solid glass art that everyone was proud of. This was the perfect class for absolute beginners.

DAASV Hosts All-Ivy Father's Day at OCSC 06/17/12 : Dartmouth alumni of all ages, and their families, along with alumni from several other Ivy Universities, met for a “Day on the Bay” and a Father's Day celebration. The event had something for everyone — a lecture, BBQ, sailing, kite flying, volleyball, and even a jumpy house for the kids (and inspired alumni). With the 34th America's Cup is coming to the Bay Area, and as future Cup hosts, we provided alumni with some knowledge and experience about this exciting extreme pastime as well as our local environs. An entertaining and educational lecture called, "The Secrets of the San Francisco Bay" was given by by OCSC founder and president, Anthony Sandberg '71.

Track Cycling At San Jose Velodrome 06/02/12 : Gentlemen, start your engines! Well, get your legs moving, that is. Track bicycling is a lot like NASCAR, only the vehicle of transport is a single-speed bike with no brakes. Sound dicey? It isn't—not under the good instruction we found at San Jose's Hellyer Park Velodrome. At the Saturday morning beginner sessions, Dartmouth alumni and their guests got a "crash course" on how to speed around the 23-degree embanked track known as a velodrome. Wheelies not recommended.

Sea Kayaking The Elkhorn Slough Estuary Reserve 05/27/12 : The Elkhorn Slough National Estuary Reserve is California's second largest marine wetland, and one of only twenty such areas in the nation, and we will be in the heart of it. Dartmouth alumni and guests experienced nature while paddling with a guide/naturalist. This expansive tidal wetland is an important habitat for sea otters, harbor seals, and over 250 resident and migratory bird species. May is bird migration and pupping season for otters and seals. In addition, seven currently endangered species make their homes here, making Elkhorn Slough a "must see" for naturalists.

Dartmouth Tour of Decorator Showcase 05/17/12 : Dartmouth alumni and guests gathered for a private tour the showhouse with architect Cary Bernstein ’84 and interior designer Betsy Burham ’84. The 35th Annual San Francisco Decorator Showcase was the West Coast’s preeminent design event. Dozens of the region’s top interior and landscape designers transformed 2020 Jackson Street (between Laguna and Octavia) into a premiere design showhouse. Designed by Julius Krafft, 2020 Jackson was built in 1902 by Wells Fargo Bank President Isaias Hellman as a wedding gift for his daughter. However, it served instead as the temporary headquarters of Wells Fargo following the 1906 earthquake and fire. The 11,500 square foot Classical Revival home has four distinct levels with San Francisco Bay views from the formal dining room, large terrace and upper floors.

Dartmouth vs Stanford Polo Tournament 05/12/12 : Dartmouth families and friends gathered for an afternoon of fast and fun polo as the Big Green faced off against Stanford in our 4th Annual Inter-Collegiate Polo Tournament at the beautiful Menlo Circus Club in Atherton.  Alumni reunited with former classmates, and relaxed on the shady sidelines of the field. Tailgating was strongly encouraged, so many brought a picnic and toasted Dartmouth's 9-5 victory! Noted equestrian, and equine vet, Ashley McCaughan DVM '04 was on hand to provide an introductory “Polo 101” talk for those new to the sport.  Alumni stepped out onto the field at halftime for the traditional “divot stomp”, and afterwards took the opportunity to meet the players and their ponies.

DAASV Bike Ride Through Sonoma's Alexander Valley 05/06/12 : Dartmouth alumni mounted up for a scenic, 26-mile, round-trip ride through Sonoma’s beautiful Alexander Valley. This ride featured a few rests — at local wineries (for research purposes, of course). It started at Lake Sonoma Recreational Parking Lot, as the first segment took us along Dry Creek Road to Ferrari-Carano Winery, J. Pedroncelli Winery, and Geyser Peak Winery. From there, cyclists headed south along Redwood Highway to the Francis Ford Coppola Winery, and Simi Winery. Afterward, everyone headed northwest along Dry Creek Road to the Dry Creek General Store to buy lunch, then to Dry Creek Vineyard for a picnic al fresco. Following lunch, everyone rode along West Dry Creek Road to Bella Vineyards Wine & Cave before returning to Lake Sonoma.

Dartmouth Tour of Bay Model 05/05/12 : Dartmouth alumni and families met for unique opportunity to learn about the geography, topography, ecology, and the human and natural history of the San Francisco Bay and Delta at a special tour of the Bay Model. The Bay Model is an education center administered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which makes possible the viewing of a scientific tool: a working hydraulic model of the San Francisco Bay and Sacramento, or more specially the San Joaquin River Delta System. The Bay Model is a three-dimensional hydraulic model of San Francisco Bay and Delta areas capable of simulating tides and currents. The Model is over 1.5 acres in size and represents an area from the Pacific Ocean to Sacramento and Stockton, including: the San Francisco, San Pablo and Suisun Bays and a portion of the Sacramento - San Joaquin Delta.

Tequila Tasting & Mixology Class 05/01/12 : You know what makes everything better? Tequila! And no one knows that better than the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley. Tequila. The word alone conjures up images of legendary 19th-century estates, borderline-obsessive craftsmanship, and agave cooking in clay ovens. At least it does once a nip of Milagro finds its way into your glass. And just in time for Cinco de Mayo, DAASV members spent two-hours at a tequila mixing class at the University Club. Mixologist and spirits expert Joel Teitelbaum served each attendee a flight of three delicious tequilas, walked us through the history and uses of this potent elixir, and taught everyone to recreate the “Worlds Freshest Margarita” first hand. This was NOT a passive experience! Dartmouth alumni also learned to prepare tequila sauces, guacamole, and other appetizing botanas, after which more snacks were served as the class transitioned into a full-blown happy hour. Hey, what did we say? Tequila just makes everything better… and the DAASV ain’t bad either!

This dynamic, multimedia exhibition included 120 haute couture and prêt-à-porter designs created between the early 1970s and 2010, along with numerous sketches, archival documents, fashion photographs, and video clips that spotlight Jean Paul Gaultier’s collaborations with filmmakers, choreographers, and musicians, most notably Madonna. For this presentation, Gaultier partnered with the Montreal-based theater company Ubu Compagnie de Création in the design of 30 animated mannequins who talk and sing in playful and poetic vignettes.

Tour of Allied Arts Guild 04/28/12 : Dartmouth alumni and guests gathered for a private docent-lead tour of one of the Peninsula’s artistic treasurers — the Allied Arts Guild, located in Menlo Park. It stands on part of what was once a vast 35,250 acre land grant dating back to the late 18th century. In 1929, wealthy art lovers Delight and Garfield Merner bought 3.5 acres of the land located at the edge of Menlo Park. Working closely with architect Gardner Dailey and artist Pedro de Lemos, they began to realize their dream of creating an arts guild in California. The Merners' goals were to provide a workplace for artists; to encourage the crafting of handsome objects for everyday use; and to support all peasant or folk art, especially that of early California.

NPR "Says You" Live Taping & VIP Reception 04/22/12 : Dartmouth alumni and their guests met for two LIVE tapings of NPR’s “Says You!” — the game of words and whimsy, bluff and bluster. Host Richard Sher and hilarious panelists Barry Nolan, Francine Achbar, Tony Kahn, Carolyn Faye Fox, Arnie Reisman, Paula Lyons, and Philip Salkind were fast on their feet and smart on their tongues. They kept everyone guessing whether the ludicrous-sounding definitions are real or simply calculated to fool everyone! In addition to the shows, alumni and guests met in the “Green Room” for a private, Dartmouth VIP reception with the show’s cast before the first taping and between shows. TCHO Chocolate Factory Tour 04/14/12 : Dartmouth alums were hosted for a private tour and tasting at TCHO Chocolate Factory (pronounced, more or less, "CHŌ") in San Francisco. The tour lasted about an hour and included a presentation and factory tour with the most knowledgeable and entertaining chocolate experts in town. In addition, our alumni experienced an in-depth guided tasting of TCHO’s flavor-driven, artisan chocolate. Attendees learned everything possible about the history of chocolate, the unique TCHOSource program of direct training and investments in cocoa farmers, and how they manufacture their New American Chocolate from scratch right in San Francisco.

DAASV Tours the Historic Filoli Mansion & Gardens 03/31/12 : Filoli was designed to include many of the elements you would expect on an English country estate, yet its here in Silicon Valley. In addition to a formal garden, plenty of space was allocated for a large working kitchen garden with espaliered fruits, berry cages, vegetable garden, cutting garden and greenhouses. There was a farm group constructed with a superintendent's house, stable for draft horses, cook house and dormitory for the men. The 10-acre gentlemen's orchard, with its rare collection of fruit and cellar, was a significant feature placed in a prominent location right along the entry drive. A stone corporation yard was built to house farm vehicles and there were fowl houses for raising Mr. Bourn's favorite breed of Chanticleer chickens. There were two cow barns on the site and pasture for Mr. Bourn's flocks of sheep, which not only added landscape value, but kept the vegetation down, reduced fire hazard and helped keep the landscape views open. Filoli had the distinction of being one of the last country places built on the Peninsula and the one that survived the longest in its original design.

Dartmouth Men's Tennis in Silicon Valley 03/24/12 : The Dartmouth Men's Tennis team came to Silicon Valley to play the Santa Clara University Broncos. Dartmouth Men's Tennis started varsity competition in 1900 and has an overall record of 767-672-12 and a 212-306 mark in the Ivy League. The Big Green claimed its first Ivy League title in 1993 with an 8-1 record in the conference and followed that with its second and most recent title in 1997. The 1997 team also finished 8-1 in the league and tied a program high with 17 total victories. The team is trending the right direction after having its best season in the Ancient Eight in 13 years with its third-place finish in the conference.

Thayer Silicon Valley Trek 03/19/12 : The Thayer School of Engineering's first "Silicon Valley Trek" is complete. This year’s trip schedule was from Sunday, March 18 through March 21, 2012. What will become an annual event has been created and planned by the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley (DAASV) and the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College. During the inaugural trip, engineering students traveled to Silicon Valley to visit technology/energy/manufacturing related companies in order to learn about the entrepreneurial development among Silicon Valley’s many industries. It promises to be a valuable learning experience, as well as inspirational to the 14 students who attended. Company visits were also be open to a limited number of DAASV members.

DAASV Monterey to Carmel Bike Ride 03/04/12 : Dartmouth alumni met for a scenic ride from Monterey to Carmel. We began at the Monterey Peninsula Recreational Trail and from there headed west. The first segment took us by Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay Aquarium on out to Lover’s Point. The second segment took us along Ocean Boulevard to Point Lobos Lighthouse and further along the coast to the 17 Mile Drive entrance. The third segment took us along 17 Mile Drive, past the Inn at Spanish Bay, out to Bird Rock, and eventually into Pebble Beach Resort for a lunch.

Origami Class: Learn the Traditional Japanese Art of Paper Folding 02/19/12 : Origami is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding, which started in the 17th century at the latest and was popularized outside Japan in the mid-1900s. It has since then evolved into a modern art form. The goal of this art is to transform a flat sheet of material into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques. The number of basic origami folds is small, but they can be combined in a variety of ways to make intricate designs. In general, these designs begin with a square sheet of paper whose sides may be different colors or prints. Traditional Japanese origami, which has been practiced since the Edo era (1603–1867), has often been less strict about these conventions, sometimes cutting the paper or using non-square shapes to start with. Valentines “Bee” Mine: Rooftop Beekeeping & Honey Demo at The Fairmont San Francisco 02/11/12 : The DAASV arranged for the perfect Valentines activity, one that was romantic, good for the environment, totally unique, *and* educational. This was a behind-the-scenes look at the epicurean garden on The Fairmont San Francisco's famed rooftop — home to four recently installed honey beehives, each housing 50,000 bees! While donning professional beekeeping suits, Dartmouth alumni and their guests heard from Helene and Spencer Marshall (owners of Marshall's Farm Natural Honey, and keepers of The Fairmont’s bee hives) and Executive Chef jW Foster, who brought the bees to the hotel. While using freshly harvested honey from the garden, alumni also enjoyed cooking demonstrations by Chef Foster and Executive Pastry Chef Stephen Sullivan. DAASV Overnight Adventure on Alcatraz Island 02/10/12 : Dartmouth alumni become members of a small, unofficial club — people who voluntarily spent the night inside a cell on Alcatraz Island. Yes, the DAASV won the 2012 National Park Service lottery to spend the night at Alcatraz. We had the entire island to ourselves! After ferrying over, alumni performed a 1 to 2 hour work project involving cell block maintenance. After the work project, our Dartmouth group was given the complete historical background by watching a screen presentation of commentaries featuring people who had experienced life on the island. Long after tourists departed, we were given a given a lengthy tour of the former penitentiary. We hiked around the island and saw areas closed-off to the general public including the gunrooms, isolation dungeons for solitary confinement, secret tunnels, and passageways. Dartmouth alumni then gathered for dinner in the mess hall, which had doors mounted with tear gas canisters, followed by s’mores over the fire. At the end of the evening, our group slept in our own 9 by 5 foot cells in Alcatraz’s D Block (aka the isolation unit) with sheet steel floors. Get In Touch With Your Inner Cupid: Introductory Archery Lessons 02/06/12 : DAASV members got in touch with thier inner Cupid, and just in time for Valentines Day. Be it a romantic date night, or simply a way to meet other adventurous alumni, the DAASV arranged for archery lessons at the only dedicated indoor archery range in the Silicon Valley. (Seriously, who knew?!?) Our private session was perfect for those who have never shot a bow, or those with some previous experience that simply seek a refresher session. Essentials were covered prior to shooting, including correctly sizing equipment to the archer (bow, arrows, safety gear, etc.), determining eye dominance (eye dominance, controls, and aiming) and best type of bow used. Also covered were range rules, safety rules, and fundamentals of archery.

Leadership Workshop: Corporate Governance, Conflicts of Interest, and Ethical Dilemmas in Alumni Club Service 01/22/12 : As alumni club leaders, we face conflicts of interest and ethical dilemmas, are exposed to external liabilities, and are routinely dealing with issues involving governance. The DAASV organized and hosted another half-day workshop for fellow Silicon Valley Ivy club leaders. This was a thought provoking, and highly practical discussion about corporate governance and liability issues facing all Ivy League alumni clubs. This seminar addressed myriad issues and provided numerous solutions. Topics addressed included governance and compliance issues, conflicts of interest and ethical dilemmas, liability issues, and risk management. Special thanks to Stefan Szulc of Marsh Risk & Insurance Services, and Douglas Park JD PhD of DYP Advisors for their generosity of time and expertise.

Santa Claus Needs A Helping (Dartmouth) Hand 12/01/11 : Sending letters to Santa have been a Christmas tradition for more than 100 years. Each year, children flood the postal service with their wish lists for Santa, some sending priority mail straight to the North Pole. It's a daunting job, and Santa can use some help. This year, as in years past, he’ll get it thanks to some Dartmouth elves in the Silicon Valley. This is a call for volunteers to help Santa answer some of the kids' letters and hopefully provide a gift. Making a child's holiday special is what the program is all about. The Dartmouth community met at the Menlo Grill in the Stanford Park Hotel for some holiday cheer, hors d’oeuvres, and then picked up a letter or two with the intent of lending Santa a helping hand. Tour With Spirit(s): Historic Pub Crawl Of Downtown Columbus 11/17/11 : Continuing the fine Dartmouth tradition of making learning fun, the Dartmouth Club of Central Ohio, with the generous sponsorship of the DAASV, organized a “historic pub crawl” of downtown Columbus, Ohio. The 3-hour tour, led by members of the Columbus Landmarks Foundation, visited three of the oldest bars in Columbus. The educational evening started at Ringside Café, then proceeded down High Street to the Elevator Brewery, and finished at the Flat Iron Grill. A “mystery prize” was awarded at the conclusion of the evening. Although the temperature dropped down into the 30s that night, over 20 Dartmouth alums still rallied — all in the name of Continuing Education — and partook in the event which lasted well into the night.

DAASV Experiences "The Odyssey" Aboard The Alma 11/05/11 : Dartmouth alumni and their families set sail for an afternoon on San Francisco Bay aboard the 1891 schooner "Alma", as we spun yarns from a limited engagement of Homer’s ancient epic, "The Odyssey". The Alma and her Aquatic Park environs evoked a strong connection to "The Odyssey" and the poem’s central theme of travel, exploration, and homecoming. It was a story of a great and difficult journey, the search for self, the discovery of other worlds and people, and the ultimate journey home.

Private VIP Tour And Tasting At Hanzell Winery And Estate Vineyards 10/23/11 : Dartmouth alumni and their guests were lead through the Ambassador's 1953 Vineyard, the 1976 de Brye Vineyard, and the recently planted 2001 Ramos Vineyard by renowned viniculturist, sommelier, and restaurateur Matt Straus of Heirloom Cafe. Attendees learned about Grand Cru farming practices, as well as the contribution local terroir—the complete natural environment in which a particular wine is produced, including factors such as the soil, topography, and climate—makes to wine quality. Following the discussion, attendees walked through the historic heritage winery building, the new state-of-the-art winery, and a barrel-aging cave. A seated tasting of the current release of Hanzell Vineyard's Chardonnay and Pinot Noir concluded the visit.

DAASV Polo Tournament: Dartmouth vs Stanford 10/16/11 : Alumni, their families and friends enoyed an afternoon of fast and fun polo as Dartmouth faced off against Stanford in the 3rd Annual Inter-Collegiate Polo Tournament at the beautiful Menlo Circus Club in Atherton. In true DAASV form, the tailgating was in full force under the Dartmouth tent! Noted equestrian and equine vet, Ashley McCaughan DVM '04 provided an introductory “Polo 101” talk for those new to the sport. Dartmouth Viewing Party for Blue Angels 10/09/11 : Look, up in the sky! It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s a… Dartmouth Party? Yes, it pays to know people in high places, and on October 9th, no one was higher than Dartmouth alumni, their families, and guests. Not even the Blue Angels — who were celebrating their 65th anniversary — were higher. DAASV members avoided the crowds while watching the Blue Angels from the 52nd floor of the landmark 555 California Street building (formerly the Carnelian Room of the Bank America Center). While millions of Californians were looking up to try to find the jets, we were looking down from 780 feet above the city, enjoying lunch, drinks, and the most commanding 270° views of the Blue Angels as they performed over San Francisco and the Bay. The air show was always incredible. But from our vantage point, throwing in a University Club catered lunch, a bar, and reserved parking, it's was clearly unforgettable.

DAASV At Mutt Lynch Winery 10/02/11 : Dartmouth Dog Lovers united at Mutt Lynch Winery in Healdsburg. We traded in our walks in the park for frolics in the vineyard at the Mutt Lynch Winery where "tail waggin' wines are made by and for dog lovers". It was an afternoon in the Sonoma Wine Country for wine tasting and some DOGGONE FUN. 
There was a BBQ catered lunch, wine tasting (for two-legged guests only!), grape stomping, and a Dog Photograph Primer by Fine Art dog photographer Jesse Freidin.

Our private tour included a presentation about the history of the Blue Bottle Coffee Company, followed by baristas giving us a cupping of six single origin coffee beans from around the world. DAASV & Big Green Bus crew visit Clos de la Tech 08/17/11 : The DAASV took the Big Green Bus crew up into the Santa Cruz Mountains for a tour of Clos de la Tech, a spectacular winery and vineyard belonging to Dartmouth's own TJ Rodgers '70 and Valeta Massey. Valeta, along with winemaker Rex, took everyone for a hike and tour, teaching us about the wine making process. After the tour, everyone was treated to a wonderful lunch at Alice's on Skyline Drive.

Navigating College Admissions with DAASV 08/6/11 : Parents and students gathered at the University Club in San Francisco, CA on 8/6/11 for a Dartmouth on Location session sponsored by the Dartmouth Office of Alumni Relations, in partnership with Admissions and Financial Aid, and the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley. Following breakfast and conversation, attendees received a presentation titled Parents and Navigating College Admissions: A Workshop for Parents and Their Children, which familiarized parents and college-bound students (in grades 9 through 11) with the national college admission process, including researching and visiting schools, preparing for interviews, completing the application, and understanding financial aid options. Becky Munsterer, Senior Associate Director of Admissions, gave the inside track for the optimal approach to succeed in college admissions. Magazine's "26 Most Fascinating Entrepreneurs" — Jack Mitchell, CEO of Richards, Mitchell's, and most recenly, San Francisco's own Wilkes Bashford. Submissions were also taken for three business/elevator pitches. This lecture was a wonderful opportunity to meet aspiring and seasoned entrepreneurs, and network with potential collaborators, investors, bankers, and attorneys.

DAASV Conducts Leadership Retreat for Ohio and Kentucky Alumni Clubs 07/30/11 : The DAASV ventured to Columbus, Ohio for an incredible Leadership Strategy Weekend, hosted by the Dartmouth Club of Central Ohio. Many alumni clubs were in attendance, including the Dartmouth Club of Northeast Ohio, the Dartmouth Club of Kentucky, and the Dartmouth Club of Southern Texas. The Friday night kick-off party included a pong tournament. By the time Saturday rolled around, it was down to business. Special thanks to Charlie Winslow '82, and his lovely wife Katarina, Catalina Gorla '09, and Seth Alpert '93 for hosting such an incredible weekend.

DAASV Overnight Adventure Aboard the USS Hornet 07/23/11 : Behold an overnight Dartmouth experience — for more than 130 alumni — aboard the USS Hornet, a WWII aircraft carrier that served in Korea, Vietnam, and the Apollo program. The ship earned nine battle stars in WWII, hosted past presidents Nixon and Ford, recovered astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong from the moon, and was the set for Rescue Dawn with Christian Bale (in case astronauts and presidents weren’t enough). Everything has been restored—down to the mess hall, where DAASV members were served dinner and breakfast. Our quarters are the original suspended three-tiered bunk beds linked together by chains, and one lucky alum got the admiral’s cabin set up last occupied by President Nixon (but that’s another story). Programming included guided tours to special weapons, engine room, bridge, catapult, and brig areas. Alumni experiences flight simulators, and children listened to ghost stories in the ship's foc'sle (or forecastle). And while there’s that element of roughing it aboard ship, it’s nothing a little beer pong in the Ward Room couldn’t fix. Roughing it is better with beer pong.

DAASV Riedel Wine Glass Workshop Palo Alto 06/24/11 : The DAASV’s own Riedel Wine Glass Workshop helped alumni experience first-hand the extraordinary way that the shape of glass affects the flavor and perception of wine. The Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley and Austrian crystal manufacturer, Riedel — recognized worldwide for designing/engineering finely tuned drinking instruments for every level of wine sophistication — made it possible to experience wine in a truly unique way, and from one of the world’s most entrepreneurial families. Coming all the way from Austria, Georg Riedel himself conducted this fascinating, hour-long seminar that included the opportunity to savor three different varietals — TJ Rodgers' own Clos de la Tech's Pinot Noir, Arrowood Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon, and Yangarra Estate Shiraz McLarenvale — all in their matching Riedel stemware. DAASV Hosts All-Ivy Sailing at OCSC 06/19/11 : The 34th America's Cup is coming to the Bay Area. Yet less than 12% of us have actually been sailing on the Bay. As future Cup hosts, we owed it to ourselves to have at least minimal knowledge and experience about this exciting extreme pastime as well as our local environs. Whether you're a novice, or have actually spent time 3 sheets to the wind at sea, there's lots to learn and enjoy. Dartmouth alumni of all ages, and their families, joined other Ivy alumni for a “Day on the Bay” which offered something for everyone — a lecture, BBQ, sailing, kite flying, volleyball, and even a jumpy house for the kids (and inspired alumni).

DAASV Eco-Experience With Endangered California Condors 06/12/11 : This was truly a once in a lifetime eco-experience. DAASV spent a day in Big Sur searching for endangered California condors! Alumni and guests met in Big Sur, then traveled up to a remote, secluded condor sanctuary, high into the Big Sur wilderness on a secured dirt road belonging to, and with special access from, the Bureau of Land Management. Ventana Wildlife Society’s condor sanctuary is located in a coastal canyon, 2,800 feet above the ocean, and yet, it is only three miles away! Wild California condors, falcons, and hawks perched near the sanctuary and were seen in abundance. Programming included discussion about California condor recovery and reintroduction, conservation ecology, conservation education, and habitat restoration.

Falconry 101: Majestic Birds of Prey and Other Raptors 06/04/11 : Few people have had the rare privilege of getting up close and personal with a hawk, falcon, or owl, but Master Falconer Kate Marden and her team were on hand to let Dartmouth alumni (and a few from Harvard, Princeton, and Cornell too) and their families do just that. We watched the aerial antics of several falcons as they flew in a live flying demonstration, and showed everyone why they are the fastest animals on the planet, and why falconry is often called “the sport of kings”. But the fun didn’t stop there. A trained hawk flew close over our heads and past our shoulders, and attendees felt the delight of having a hawk, falcon, and owl sit on everyon's fists. This was a fun and fact-filled occasion with ample photo opportunities and one-on-one time with these incredible birds of prey. (C) Justin Tzou 2011

DAASV at NCAA Women's Rowing Championships 05/29/11 : More than 90 members of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley traveled to Gold River to cheer on Dartmouth College Women's Crew in the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships. The Sacramento Aquatic Center on Lake Natoma was an excellent venue for the event. The competition was very exciting, and one of Dartmouth's entries came in first in its final. DAASV Learn to Surf Camp 05/28/11 : Alumni, families, and their guests joined in at Surfer's Beach in Half Moon Bay for an exhilarating DAASV surfing lesson. Professional surfer Dominic "Pelican" Spinardi taught us the basics of Northern California big wave wetsuit surfing. The entire group jumped into the water while Dominic and his friends guided us into the majestic waves on El Grananda Beach (Surfer's beach) in Half Moon Bay. DAASV at Audubon Canyon Ranch 05/22/11 : Each spring, the Great Egrets and Great Blue Herons return to one of the most significant and most studied nesting sites on the West Coast: the Martin Griffin Preserve (former Bolinas Lagoon preserve of Audubon Canyon Ranch). Under the guidance of our naturalists, Dartmouth alumni and their families hiked to Henderson Overlook for a bird’s-eye view into the nesting sites as fledglings hatch, explored 8 miles of canyons, hiking trails, three ponds, all while we learned about their diverse ecosystems.

Topics included: Board Management, Developing an Effective Communications Strategy, Motivating Young Alumni, Corporate Sponsorship, Increasing Dues and Participation, and Recognizing the Power of the Brand. Kirk Tramble T'02 lead the communications discussion, Howard Mueller '65 P'98 spoke about branding, and Harvard Club president Douglas Park spoke about board dynamics. President Kim has been awarded a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, named one of America’s “25 Best Leaders” by US News & World Report, and selected as one of TIME magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in the World". DAASV - Secrets of Public Speaking 04/21/11 : Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley sponsored the presentation, “How to Win An Audience: The Secrets of Public Speaking” featuring Brent Bilger ’80 E’81. The event was held at the University Club in Palo Alto. By way of introduction, the fear of public speaking is people's #1 fear - it's more common than fear of death (or spiders). "In other words," Jerry Seinfield deadpanned, "at a funeral, the average person would rather be in the casket than giving the eulogy." Whether you’re an engineer, executive, entrepreneur, or graduate student, everyone must make presentations. The two key criteria to a powerful presentation are the content and the way in which the content is presented. This event was about the latter. Brent Bilger '80 E'81 gave us tools to more fully engage an audience. We were shown how to exude confidence in the presentation of any content. DAASV Valentines Dinner 02/06/11 : Dartmouth romantics met for a most special kind of backward culinary adventure as they took over San Francisco's famed Heirloom Cafe for the evening. The evening began with dessert, and the most decadent truffles by Socola Chocolates. An entertaining research study (administered by Dennis Barton MD and Socola Chocolates) was designed to determine what ones preference for chocolate really says about an individuals, and how that may help one celebrate true love. The evening then worked its way through several courses, including a delicious Cassoulet entrée, pasta, and end with an Oysters Rockefeller salad. Elegant wine pairings accompanied each course.

DAASV at Año Nuevo Elephant Seal Hike 01/23/11 : The Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley members and guests met at Año Nuevo State Reserve, located on Highway 1 between Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay, for a naturalist-guided tour of one of the largest protected rookeries of Northern Elephant Seals. During a three-mile walk over rolling sand dunes elephant seals were seen in their natural habitat at the height of the birthing season.

DAASV Plays Broom Hockey 01/16/11 : The DAASV hosted its Second Annual Broom Hockey Game at the Winter Lodge — the first outdoor ice rink west of the Sierras — in Palo Alto. Alumni came for the delicious food and hot chocolate, for the epic grudge match that occurred, and even for some fun on the ice on a Sunday (what else were they doing on a Sunday afternoon—laundry?). DAASV and Bill Neukom in SF 01/13/11 : The Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley co-hosted an evening with Bill Neukom '64 DP — Managing Partner and CEO of the San Francisco Giants, and former Chairman of Dartmouth's Board of Trustees. Thanks to the generosity of PG&E CEO Peter Darbee '75 and T'77, and PG&E Human Resources, all attendees enjoyed a Dartmouth cocktail networking hour in the Main Conference Room with members of the PG&E recruiting team in attendance. Following the social hour, we gathered in the Auditorium for a conversation and Q&A with Bill Neukom. After a wonderful welcome and introduction by Steve Malnight T'02, we heard Bill's incredible story about his leadership of the Giants through this year's amazing World Series triumph! DAASV and Pulitzer Prize Author Jack Rakove 12/02/10 : Wheelock and Occom members of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley spent an evening at the University Club in Palo Alto with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jack Rakove. The DAASV's premium level members enjoyed cocktails, a lovely dinner, delicious chocolates, and a reading by noted historian Jack Rakove from his new book, "Revolutionaries: A New History of the Invention of America" that was listed in the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine's GOOD READS: Dartmouth Faculty Book Recommendations. Following the reading, Professor Rakove segued into a discussion on what kind of lessons we can learn from America's founding fathers about being revolutionary leaders in the business/entrepreneurial world today. All attendees received a signed copy of his book. The Board of Directors greatly appreciates the generosity of the Ivy League Magazine Network, US Trust, and Socola Chocolates. Their support of Silicon Valley's Dartmouth alumni has been invaluable.

"Dartmouth Five" at Heirloom Cafe 11/23/10 : DAASV members and their guests enjoyed dinner, wine, and listened to "Dartmouth Five" Dixieland Band at Heirloom Cafe in San Francisco. In the late '60s, the College had a Dixieland Jazz band called "Dartmouth Five". These talented young men also recorded a successful album - Dartmouth Five: On The Road. Many of its members went on to more steady professions, like medicine and dentistry, and several became professional musicians. Scott Anthony '70 became one of the best jazz banjo players in the country and has led a Dixieland band, called the Golden Gate Rhythm Machine, in the Bay Area for years. Stephen Straus '70 became a dentist in Massachusetts, returning to music on occasion. These photos are available for participants to download and use. DAASV and Hamlet on Alcatraz 11/06/10 : Dartmouth alumni and guests made history as they mounted Shakespeare’s Hamlet on Alcatraz Island! A production of Hamlet by William Shakespeare opened this fall, and fully inhabits “the Rock”. Our Dartmouth audience had unprecedented opportunities to enter parts of the island ordinarily closed to visitors. In addition, Dartmouth visitors encountered performance environments throughout the island that enhanced their experience of the space and its history and provoked contemplation of project themes. After the performance, Dartmouth alumni and their guests went behind the scenes—really!—to meet the cast and crew, and enjoy a talk by the creator and artistic director. DAASV and '14 Parents 11/05/10 : The Parent Committee of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley invited the parents of the Dartmouth Class of '14 to come to the home of Kim Young '81 P'14 and John Moragne '79 P'14 for cocktails, dinner, and a discussion of all things Dartmouth! A casual autumn party provided the opportunity to meet fellow parents of Dartmouth freshmen, compare notes, and catch that famous Dartmouth spirit! After dinner, there was a Q&A with the Bilgers and the Koenigs. The Bilgers are parents of students in the classes of '11 and '13, and the Koenigs are parents of a '13. During the evening they shared their insights on The D Plan, programs abroad, sophomore summer on campus, sports and club activities, and much more. Inter-Collegiate Polo with DAASV 10/17/10 : The Inter-Collegiate Polo Tournament was held at Menlo Circus Club in Atherton. Family and friends gathered to watch an afternoon of fast and fun polo in the 2nd Annual Inter-Collegiate Polo Tournament at the beautiful Menlo Circus Club in Atherton. Attendees cheered on their favorite team, reunited with former classmates, and relaxed on the shady sidelines of the field. Tailgating was strongly encouraged with picnic lunches at the Dartmouth, Stanford, Columbia, Brown, and Cornell tents! Noted equestrian and equine vet, Ashley McCaughan DVM '04 of Valley Animal Hospital, provided an introductory “Polo 101” talk for those new to the sport. At halftime we stepped out onto the field for the traditional “divot stomp”, and afterwards we took the opportunity to meet the players and their horses.

How Airplanes Fly with DAASV at Palo Alto Airport 10/17/10 : DAASV (and Columbia Business School alumni) and guests gathered on a soggy afternoon at the Palo Alto Airport to learn about how airplanes fly, and why we can't. We found out how airplanes that weigh anywhere from a few thousand to several hundred thousand pound can fly. Along the way, there was a brief lecture about the ABC's of aerodynamics and aircraft design, information about the latest design developments, a look at what experimental aircraft of the future may look like, and discovering how flying from point A to point B in your own airplane differs from flying in commercial airlines. There was an opportunity to climb into the cockpit of a four-seater and experience the instrumentation when fully powered, a look under the hood of a plane in the maintenance hanger, and time to sit alongside the runway where planes take off and land from the benches where Certified Flight Instructors (CFI) watch their students solo. The day was wrapped up with a paper airplane flying contest and interested alumni could plot out their first steps toward taking classes or earning a pilot's license.  This event was brought to us by Desktop Aeronautics, Inc. and the management of the Sundance Flying Club, in partnership with our friends at the Columbia Business School Alumni Association of the Bay Area. DAASV at Windy Oaks Winery 08/22/10 : DAASV members and guests took a leisurely drive through the Santa Cruz Mountains to meet at Windy Oaks Vineyard in the beautiful Corralitos Hills (near Watsonville). This estate vineyard is owned by Jim Schultze T'76, and his wife, Judy, who invited us back to sample their superb, award-winning Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. We drank in the scenery during a private walking tour of this 15-acre vineyard, 1,000 feet up on a ridge overlooking the Monterey Bay. While we enjoyed the view and conversation, we partook of a gourmet box lunch prepared by Carried Away Foods of Aptos (an alum of Chez Panisse). We learned about Windy Oaks' unique organic/sustainable vineyard practices. Ten percent of all wine purchased is being donated to the Dartmouth College Fund. DAASV and Big Green Bus at Tesla 08/09/10 : On 8/9/2010 the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley held its first green energy event at Tesla Motors headquarters in Palo Alto, CA. DAASV gathered discussion on the innovation frontiers and challenges facing the designing of tomorrow's lighter and longer life batteries for use in automobiles, aerospace, and elsewhere. The Big Green Bus from Dartmouth was also at the event and available for tours. DAASV Hike At Big Basin 04/25/10 : Dartmouth alumni and friends met with docent Dave Auerbach for a private hike through, and picnic lunch at, Big Basin Redwoods State Park — California's oldest State Park, established in 1902. Home to the largest continuous stand of ancient coast redwoods south of San Francisco, the park consists of over 18,000 acres of old growth and recovering redwood forest, with mixed conifer, oaks, chaparral, and riparian habitats. Elevations in the park vary from sea level to over 2,000 feet. The climate ranges from foggy and damp near the ocean to sunny, warm ridge tops.

Admit Party for Class of '14 04/18/2010 : On April 18, 2010, students who applied to Dartmouth College and were admitted from the Silicon Valley and San Francisco Peninsula areas were invited to meet each other and have an information session at the home of Jeff Crowe in Atherton, CA. Also in attendance were recent graduates from Dartmouth College and parents of recent students. While this was the largest such gathering the two District Enrollment Directors, Jeff Crowe and Linda Swenberg, had hosted, it was still possible to ask questions and find out more about the College. Many of the students were planning to attend Dimensions at Dartmouth, a program that lets newly admitted students spend some time with current students and get to know the school and the campus. Members were treated to dinner and drinks before the evening's program. Following dinner, DAASV President James von Rittmann '95 introduced our speaker, Theresa Lina Stevens, who presented guidelines and specific tips about successful networking, including interactive breakout sessions for all attendees. DAASV Breakfast with Peter Saccio 02/05/10 : On 2/5/2010, members of Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley and their guests had green eggs and ham breakfast with Peter Saccio, Leon D. Black Professor of Shakespearean Studies emeritus from Dartmouth College. Professor Saccio discussed modern theater (he just returned from London) and his experiences as a scholar/teacher of Shakespeare. Professor Saccio gave readings from several plays and explained the context and significance of the material. These photos are available for download by participants. DAASV at King Tut 12/13/09 : On 12/13/2009 Dartmouth Alumni Continuing Education, Dartmouth Club of Greater San Francisco, and DAASV sponsored a lecture by Susan Ackerman, Preston H. Kelsey Professor of Religion and chair of the Religion Department at Dartmouth College. An introduction to the time of Tutankhamun in ancient Egypt was followed by a reception and viewing Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs at the de Young Museum in San Francisco, CA. DAASV Dog Days of Summer 11/01/09 : Dartmouth's dog (and wine) lovers unite! We traded in our walks in the park for frolics in the vineyard at the Mutt Lynch Winery in Healdsburg. Alumni of all ages, and their canine guests, scampered up to Sonoma's Wine Country for a wine tasting, a BBQ catered lunch, lectures, a pet psychic, a grape stomping contest, a photography session, and some doggone fun.

DAASV Membership Appreciation 10/4/09 : The 2009 Dartmouth Alumni Membership Appreciation Event for the SF Bay Area was at Olympic Circle Sailing Club in the Berkeley Marina. Alumni, parents, and families were welcome to share the day by the Bay. There was kite making and decorating (the wind is steady and very reliable), Anthony Sandberg of OCSC speaking on Secrets of San Francisco Bay, and going sailing on the Bay with OCSC boats and crews. Lunch by James and Scott was wonderful, as usual, prepared on the OCSC BBQs. Participants are welcome to download and use photos from this collection. Dartmouth Class of '13 Sendoff 08/24/09 : On 8/23/09 the local Dartmouth College admissions representatives Linda & Jeff and the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley met to send off the local members of the Class of 2013. We met at Linda's house in Los Gatos with current students, recent graduates, parents of current and recent students, '13s, and their parents. Current students shared their experiences and insights and new students asked questions. Parents also got information about getting their students ready for college. DAASV Tidal Marsh Hike 08/04/09 : Dartmouth Alumni Association of Silicon Valley arranged for a nature talk followed by bird watching hike at Baylands in Palo Alto, CA 8/4/09. We met inside the Lucy Evans Baylands Nature Interpretive Center, where a ranger presented information about the salt marshes and the history of the Baylands Park area. Big Green Bus visits DAASV 07/18/09 : The Dartmouth College Big Green Bus came to visit Palo Alto, CA and share their message of sustainability and ecology with the community. The BGB and crew are on a cross-country tour to make an impact in energy use decisions. Dartmouth Parents' Meeting Los Altos Hill CA 10/29/07 : We had the good fortune to join a group of parents of current Dartmouth students at a reception with Holly Sateia, the Dean of Student Life and Senior Associate Dean of the College. We met at the Los Altos Hills home of Brent and Cami Bilger, enjoyed some wine and a light buffet, and then got down to some interesting facts about our students. Discussions included parents' concerns as well as current issues at Dartmouth.
